The Hit Light Novel and Manga Series ‘I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons’ is Getting a TV Anime Adaptation!

I’m so excited that the popular light novel and manga series “I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons” is getting a TV anime adaptation! This news totally made my day.

For those not in the know, “I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons” (original Japanese title “Hikyouiku kara Nigetai Watashi”) is a romantic comedy series written by Izumi Sawano with illustrations by Miru Yumesaki. It was first published online in 2018 before being picked up by the publishing company Shufu to Seikatsu Sha.

The story centers around Duchess Leticia Dorman, who has been betrothed to the crown prince since childhood. After years of strict princess lessons, Leticia yearns for freedom and hopes the prince will fall for someone else. However, at a royal ball, the prince instead insists Leticia is still his fiancée, leading to a comedic battle of wills between the stubborn Leticia who wants to escape her fate and the prince determined to win her heart.

In 2020, the series got a manga adaptation illustrated by Uri Sugata, which is serialized on Comic PASH!. This manga is also licensed in English by J-Novel Club. As of November 2022, the light novel and manga series have sold over 1.2 million copies combined.

The TV anime adaptation was announced on November 2, 2023, coinciding with the release of the manga’s 5th compiled book volume. Artist Uri Sugata posted celebratory illustrations and comments about the anime announcement on Twitter, expressing gratitude and excitement. A promotional video for the 5th manga volume was also released, teasing the anime.

As of now, the animation studio, release date, cast, staff, and other details have not been revealed yet. But the series has gained enough popularity in Japan to warrant an anime, so fans can expect a solid production. With over 15 volumes of source material, there’s plenty of story to adapt to! 🤓

Light novel adaptations have been dominating the anime scene lately. Series like “My Next Life as a Villainess“, “The Saint’s Magic Power is Omnipotent“, and “Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear” have proven that anime based on light novel romcoms can gain huge success. I’m confident “I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons” has the potential to join their ranks!

Its premise combines classic fairytale tropes with a spirited female lead, providing a fresh take perfect for modern anime fans. Leticia is sure to captivate viewers with her sharp tongue and defiant attitude. She serves as an atypical princess heroine – far from the refined, polite ladies often seen in royal stories. I can’t wait to see Leticia’s fiery personality animated along with all her hilarious reactions and scheming!

The back and forth between such an incompatible couple promises lots of laugh-out-loud moments. Leticia’s drastic efforts to get out of the engagement range from disguising herself to staging the prince’s “affair”. Then there’s the prince’s no-nonsense rebuttals and occasional smug teasing. Their chemistry (or lack thereof) has me hooked! Anime visuals and voice acting is sure to enhance the entertainment.

The supporting cast adds flavor too. Fans hope side characters like Leticia’s airheaded mom, strict instructor, and cheerful best friend will get enough screen time. I’ll be disappointed if they don’t!

As for production values, animation studio Feel would be a great choice in my opinion. Their past work adapting comedic light novel romances matches “I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons” nicely.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for dreamy pastel backgrounds, polished cute character designs, and lighthearted slice-of-life aesthetics with some sparkles and flower motifs. That would perfectly suit the girly fairytale vibe!

To wrap up, “I Want to Escape from Princess Lessons” seems primed for anime success. I’ll be tuning in once it airs and fangirling every week over the latest episode! The anime announcement has me hyped. Let me know if you plan to watch too!!
